I.K. Aivazovsky, I.E. Repin. “Pushkin’s Farewell to the Sea.” (“Farewell, free element…”). 1887. Canvas, oil. Aivazovsky knew his weakness for a portrait and invited Repin himself to paint Pushkin. Later Repin commented on the joint work like this: “Wonderful sea painted by Aivazovsky. And I was honored to paint a figure there.”
